Beanstalk Launches High-Quality Volunteering Programme with Support from Preston City Council

Building confidence, creating pathways, and strengthening community networks Beanstalk Skills Academy CIC is proud to share the successful launch of its new structured volunteering programme, made possible through funding from the Preston Volunteer Fund. This support allowed us to create more than just volunteer roles. We built a programme that helps people rebuild confidence, gain practical skills, and feel connected to their community. It is now a core part of our long-term service offer. Designed for Impact The programme was developed around five clear and purposeful roles: Each role comes with a structured induction, training, and ongoing support, making the experience accessible and consistent for volunteers. We also appointed a Community Engagement Officer currently part-funded by Beanstalk and UnLtd. The role supports volunteer coordination and has been key to embedding the programme across our wider delivery. We aim to make this post self-sustaining within 12 months. What the Funding Helped Us Achieve We are also proud to have achieved the Valuing Volunteers Quality Mark, recognising the structure, safety, and inclusivity of our approach.   A Community Programme with Real Impact This project is not just about systems and outcomes. It is about people. One of our first volunteers, Lee, shared: “Having been unable to work due to health problems, volunteering has given me an opportunity to give something back.” Lee helped shape the programme in its early stages, completed his training, and now plays a key role in supporting new volunteers.  Read Lee’s story: Case Study: Lee’s Journey into Volunteering – Beanstalk Business Centre Looking Ahead The programme will officially launch at our MET community event on 8 July 2025. Our trained volunteer team will be supporting delivery on the day and showcasing the difference this work is already making. We are now exploring how to build on this strong foundation, reach more people, and support more community-led delivery across Preston. The success of this pilot is already informing future funding bids and partnership discussions. f you are a funder, local organisation, or community leader interested in learning more, we would love to hear from you. Ready, Steady, Volunteer!

Welcoming Our New Volunteers to Team Beanstalk On Friday 20th June, our Beanstalk HQ buzzed with energy and warmth as we welcomed five fabulous volunteers for our very first Volunteer Induction Session. This wasn’t just any old meeting, it was the official launch of our brand-new volunteering programme and a chance to prep for the MET Air Fryer Event on 8th July. Spoiler alert: it was a brilliant day. — A Warm Welcome and Powerful Start The day kicked off with an open-hearted introduction from our founder, Kerry, who shared her personal story, growing up as a young mum in a council house, determined not to let anyone feel written off or overlooked. Her honesty set the tone for the session: real, respectful, and rooted in purpose. “We believe in second chances, fresh starts, and making everyone feel like they belong. That’s what Beanstalk is all about.” What Beanstalk Does (And Why It Matters) We explored the three pillars that guide all Beanstalk programmes: · Employment and Skills- helping people build confidence and find pathways into work · Society and Enterprise- supporting people to turn ideas into income · Community Connection- bringing people together through learning, food, and fun The Air Fryer Cookery Course is part of that third pillar, creating safe spaces for people to learn, connect, and grow. — Let’s Talk Cooking, Safety, and Being a Great Volunteer The group dived into everything they needed to know to support our upcoming cookery sessions. We Covered: · How the cookery programme will run and how to support it · Accessibility and inclusive volunteering · Food hygiene: handwashing, contamination, pests · Health and safety: fire exits, signage, safe kitchens · Safeguarding: what to look out for and how to report Despite the relaxed setting, the conversations were focused and thoughtful. Volunteers felt comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and even challenging things they didn’t quite agree with, which is exactly what we love to see. Building Confidence, Connection and a Few Laughs Throughout the day, personal stories were shared, laughs were had, and friendships were formed. Volunteers encouraged one another, helped each other remember the six stages of cleaning, and reflected on their own progress. Some were overcoming anxiety or long periods of isolation. But by the end of the session, everyone was smiling, participating, and proud to be part of something bigger. One volunteer even called the day a “self-award” after overcoming nerves just to show up. We couldn’t be more proud. Fuelled by Food, Tea and Cake (Obviously) It wouldn’t be Beanstalk without food. We broke up the day with a tasty lunch prepared in-house, plus tea, coffee and refreshments to keep the energy flowing. When asked what we could do better, one volunteer joked: “More cake.” Noted. What Volunteers Said They Learned · The six stages of cleaning and why they matter · The difference between contamination types · How to challenge anxiety and show up anyway · That they already knew more than they thought · Volunteering can be fun, rewarding, and confidence-boosting Final Thoughts This induction session wasn’t just about preparing for an event. It was about launching a new chapter at Beanstalk, where every volunteer feels valued, informed, and inspired. By the end of the day, our five new volunteers were ready to support the MET Air Fryer Event with confidence, laughter, and a whole lot of heart. They left knowing they’re not just helping out. They’re part of a movement. And we’re so lucky to have them on board. Next stop: MET Air Fryer Event on 8th July Volunteers, get ready to shine. We’ve got aprons and lanyards waiting for you.
