Ready, Steady, Volunteer!
Welcoming Our New Volunteers to Team Beanstalk On Friday 20th June, our Beanstalk HQ buzzed with energy and warmth as we welcomed five fabulous volunteers for our very first Volunteer Induction Session. This wasn’t just any old meeting, it was the official launch of our brand-new volunteering programme and a chance to prep for the MET Air Fryer Event on 8th July. Spoiler alert: it was a brilliant day. — A Warm Welcome and Powerful Start The day kicked off with an open-hearted introduction from our founder, Kerry, who shared her personal story, growing up as a young mum in a council house, determined not to let anyone feel written off or overlooked. Her honesty set the tone for the session: real, respectful, and rooted in purpose. “We believe in second chances, fresh starts, and making everyone feel like they belong. That’s what Beanstalk is all about.” What Beanstalk Does (And Why It Matters) We explored the three pillars that guide all Beanstalk programmes: · Employment and Skills- helping people build confidence and find pathways into work · Society and Enterprise- supporting people to turn ideas into income · Community Connection- bringing people together through learning, food, and fun The Air Fryer Cookery Course is part of that third pillar, creating safe spaces for people to learn, connect, and grow. — Let’s Talk Cooking, Safety, and Being a Great Volunteer The group dived into everything they needed to know to support our upcoming cookery sessions. We Covered: · How the cookery programme will run and how to support it · Accessibility and inclusive volunteering · Food hygiene: handwashing, contamination, pests · Health and safety: fire exits, signage, safe kitchens · Safeguarding: what to look out for and how to report Despite the relaxed setting, the conversations were focused and thoughtful. Volunteers felt comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and even challenging things they didn’t quite agree with, which is exactly what we love to see. Building Confidence, Connection and a Few Laughs Throughout the day, personal stories were shared, laughs were had, and friendships were formed. Volunteers encouraged one another, helped each other remember the six stages of cleaning, and reflected on their own progress. Some were overcoming anxiety or long periods of isolation. But by the end of the session, everyone was smiling, participating, and proud to be part of something bigger. One volunteer even called the day a “self-award” after overcoming nerves just to show up. We couldn’t be more proud. Fuelled by Food, Tea and Cake (Obviously) It wouldn’t be Beanstalk without food. We broke up the day with a tasty lunch prepared in-house, plus tea, coffee and refreshments to keep the energy flowing. When asked what we could do better, one volunteer joked: “More cake.” Noted. What Volunteers Said They Learned · The six stages of cleaning and why they matter · The difference between contamination types · How to challenge anxiety and show up anyway · That they already knew more than they thought · Volunteering can be fun, rewarding, and confidence-boosting Final Thoughts This induction session wasn’t just about preparing for an event. It was about launching a new chapter at Beanstalk, where every volunteer feels valued, informed, and inspired. By the end of the day, our five new volunteers were ready to support the MET Air Fryer Event with confidence, laughter, and a whole lot of heart. They left knowing they’re not just helping out. They’re part of a movement. And we’re so lucky to have them on board. Next stop: MET Air Fryer Event on 8th July Volunteers, get ready to shine. We’ve got aprons and lanyards waiting for you.
